Unique Prince Exhibition and New Book Highlight Music Icon’s Birthday Weekend
ARLINGTON VA – For many collectors, it’s all about the thrill of the hunt. Countless artifacts are acquired at auction but never see the light of day. But on June 7 from the clubhouse at Crystal Towers (1600 S. Eads St Arlington VA), local author Eric S. Townsend brings his Prince collection to the people as part of a unique event called PRIVATE JOY.
Townsend began collecting as a means of healing from the passing of his role model. “Prince and I belong to an exclusive club. We’re multi-instrumentalists who’ve produced, arranged, composed, and performed entire albums of music. If you know firsthand what Prince could do as a creative professional, then you’re hooked for life.”
The collection features promotional material, news clippings, records, backstage passes, autographs, musical instruments, and more from the icon’s early years (1972-1983). Several originate from Prince’s inner circle — including a former manager, publicists, and employees of Paisley Park, Glam Slam, and Warner Bros. Records. Some items are considered “holy grail finds” among collectors.
In addition to showing the collection, Townsend will read passages from his newly-expanded biography on the rock star. Paisley Prince presents a series of sketches from his developmental years. Become a fly on the wall as Prince’s circle forms. The legend is placed at human scale, with his shortcomings and triumphs receiving intimate treatment.
“Prince was as ruthless and complicated as any on his climb up the ladder. But that’s the music business,” says Howard Bolden, a veteran deejay who’ll spin Prince’s early hits and deep cuts during the event. “He also survived epilepsy, a broken family, emancipation as a pre-teen, and backlash from the Civil Rights Movement to become one of the greatest African-American artists.”
PRIVATE JOY debuts on Prince’s birthday weekend. The main event is the VIP party on Friday evening, June 7 (7pm doors). Enjoy the collection, a vinyl listening party, a book reading with signed copies, and some of Prince’s favorite treats. Limited to 150 attendees. On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, browse the collection at your leisure (12-5pm, free to the public).

Eads St Arlington VA) is located just one block from the Crystal City Metro stop on the Blue/Yellow lines. Park on the street or in one of several local garages.
